Treasury

During the last decades of the 20th century, treasury developed into a separate financial discipline.

Whereas the bookkeeper or accountant was formerly the employee managing all banking affairs, now the treasurer is the person responsible for company financing, interest-, foreign exchange- and cash management. Also, nowadays, corporate insurance matters are often being transferred to the treasurer.

Over time the treasurer has become a risk manager.

“Treasury” means 'managing treasures', the company's treasures. Therefore the treasurer is the person dealing with all financial risks that threaten the company.
